| Requirements and Responsibilities For Patent Law Director |
| Directs the patent law function of an organization and supports all patent-related legal issues. Develops policies and procedures to ensure an organization's inventions or trademarks are valid and protected. Collaborates with research and development to ensure inventions or trademarks are novel, non-obvious, and useful. Manages a portfolio of new and existing patents. Reviews technical and legal descriptions of patents or trademarks to ensure claims are clearly defined and meet patent office requirements. Oversees patent filings and communicates with regulatory examiners to resolve objections, amend claims, and ensure approval. Requires registration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Requires a JD. May require admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to senior management. Manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. |
